As many of you are aware the PA House and State legislative districts and the 7th Congressional district have been reapportioned. Haverford Township has been split into two State legislative districts, Wards 1 and 9 have been moved into the 163rd Legislative District currently represented by State Rep. Nick Miccozie while Wards, 2-8 continue to remain in the 166th Legislative District represented by State Rep. Greg Vitali.
Appeals of the final plan can be made to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court until January 11. The Haverford Township Board of Commissioners opposed the division of the State House redistricting, voted to register their objection to the plan, but has decided not to file an appeal. Any resident or elected official is able to file an appeal as well.
The 7th Congressional District has been significantly redrawn now spanning 5 counties and has been rated the 5th most Gerrymandered district in the nation. While Haverford Township remains in the 7th, the new district (map) significantly reduces the influence of Delaware County, divides communities, and does not reflect the demographics in PA where there are a million more registered Democrats than Republicans (see article by J.J. Balaban).
